Ruth M. Haberman

U.S. Veteran

Ruth L. (Merritt) Haberman of Methuen formerly of Reading died February 4, 2013 at the Life Care Center in North Billerica. She was 91 years of age. Ruth was born in Melrose, Massachusetts on June 28, 1921. She was the daughter of Harold and Marion (Bolton) Merritt. She was raised in Wakefield and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943. She proudly served our country during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. Ruth lived in Methuen for the past 13 years and was formerly a resident of Reading for 46 years. She was a member of the Old South United Methodist Church in Reading. She was a life member, past Commander and the assistant finance coordinator of the Women’s American Legion Post 62 in Reading. She was a member of the Bay State Chapter One Women Marines. She and her husband enjoyed belonging to the North Reading Couples Bowling group. She will be fondly remembered as a card player. She enjoyed teaching her grandchildren to play cards and reminisce about her time spent in the Marine Corps. Ruth was the beloved wife of 53 years to the late Augustus M. Haberman who died in 2003. She was the cherished mother of Richard W. Haberman of Centre Barnstead, NH; Kenneth W. Haberman of Watertown, CT; Douglas E. Haberman of Tewksbury; Thomas R. Haberman of Gloucester; and Marsha Haberman Cooper of Sarasota, FL. Cherished sister of Doris Calt of Wakefield and loving grandmother of Erich and his wife Nicole, Missy, Jess, Stephen and his wife Kate, Bryan, Michelle, Steven and Nicole and great grandmother of Isaiah and Talia Young. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, February 7 at the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.) Reading from 4-7 pm followed by a funeral service at 7 pm. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial with military honors at the VA National Cemetery, Bourne on Friday at 10:45 AM. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Ruth’s memory to the Fisher House Boston PO Box 230 South Walpole MA 02071 to support the families of our veterans.
